5 Best Places For Aesthetic Film Shoots in Singapore

Perhaps you’re a budding street photographer looking for your next hidden spot, a hobbyist seeking a new place for a photo walk, or simply scouring the net to find new places with enough character. You’ve landed in the right place. In this article, we round up our top picks and point out the best spots to capture amazing film photos in Singapore.

We all know that shooting on film is a whole different ball game. In order to achieve the best possible effect, there are certain limitations that we have to work with, like not knowing how the photos will turn out till later (and hoping for the best!).

Counting a certain place as a great spot for shooting film is also more than just taking photos alone. What should also come into consideration are the coffee (or beer) breaks in-between, surrounding facilities and pragmatically speaking, what wet weather plans each place affords. We invite you to take a look at filmm.io’s picks – you may just find your next favourite haunt!

1. Chinatown (and also, People’s Park Complex)

Here’s where old school cameras meet the charm of a nostalgic, old school place. There are just so many hidden spots in Chinatown that allow you to capture the everyday intricacies and beauty of ‘a slice of life’ in Singapore. Some lesser known spots include the small alleyways that allow for great architectural pictures.

In addition, you can also try shooting at People’s Park Complex, where many merchants ply traditional (and unfortunately) fast fading trades, like knife sharpening, cobbling and jewellery making.

All in all, this is a great place to capture a taste of Singapore’s intangible cultural essence. Plus, we love the food options available here.

2. Haji Lane: A Visual Treat

For photos with great colours, a bustling atmosphere and vivid murals, you can’t go wrong with Haji Lane. In the case of rain, it’s also very convenient to pop into any of the cafes for a well-deserved coffee break. Extra points because the cafes around this area are hip with great music and you’ll also be able to find shops with unique wares and offerings.

3. Little India

Sitting in the vicinity of Haji Lane is Little India, which is known as one of Singapore’s most vibrant areas since there is always something taking place here at all times of the day. As one of our city’s historical enclaves, this spot is filled with temples, villas and shophouses with distinct architecture that will make for great photos.

Some days, you just want a break from the outdoor action and want to shoot comfortably, especially on days when the tropical heat of our Singaporean summer gets a bit too much. We get it – so we’ve included some indoor options!

4. Gardens by the Bay

Grab a hearty lunch, then head over to the (blissfully air-conditioned) cloud forest and forest dome in the afternoon where you can escape the heat for a little. Do expect to spend about 2h to cover both domes.

Here’s our hot tip: Nearing sunset, take a short walk to Marina Barrage to get those amazing sunset shots.
